Port Hedland became a port in 1899 when the first jetty was completed. It has played an important role in the export of cattle, pearl shell, wool, livestock and minerals. The port now handles vessels up to 325m l.o.a. and has a throughput of well in excess of 90 million tonnes a year and expected tonnage by 2010 of 120 million tonnes a year.
