The Port of Newcastle is located at the entrance of the Hunter river some 62 nautical miles north of Sydney, on the eastern coast of New South Wales. In 1797, plentiful surface coal was discovered in Newcastle and from that time on, ships regularly stopped, sending their crew in to collect the coal.POAGS involvement in the port dates back to the days of sail, when it was a major shareholder in the Great Northern Stevedoring Company.

Today, POAGS utilises several modern facilities in the port for handling a wide range of import and export commodities.
